On January 29, 2018, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos announced the opening of the Amazon Spheres in downtown Seattle. If you spend any time online, you’ve probably read an article or two about it already.
The Amazon Spheres are a perfect example of a biosphere, a closed ecological system that doesn’t interact with the surrounding environment. What the Amazon team has created is a “mini-rainforest” environment, with tropical plants and living walls, augmented with the sounds of waterfalls and the smell of flowers.
Taken from the Amazon blog:
The Spheres are filled with more than 40,000 individual plants; there are more than 300 plant species from more than 50 countries and almost every continent, each with an interesting story to tell. They all provide something that is missing from a typical office space, a direct link to nature. Treehouse meeting rooms, river and waterfall features, palladiums, a four-story living wall, and epiphytic trees are just some of the unique features within this one-of-a-kind space.
“Our goal with The Spheres was to create a unique gathering place where employees could collaborate and innovate together, and where the Seattle community could gather to experience biodiversity in the center of the city. (…)”
Speaking as a biophiliac, I’m thinking of starting a crowdfunding campaign to fund the “Calgary Biodome”. What do you think? Would you want to visit / work / live in here?
